As one of the most revered names in Iranian cinema, Jafar Panahi’s latest film, which premiered at Cannes, finds its core conflict in the prevalence of social media in Iran. Panahi observes the unrest within the Iranian society and the art world by placing himself and his family right in the centre of a social media incident. 3-Faces is set in villages where Azeri is spoken, by the Iranian-Turkish border, where Panahi’s family is from, and he plays himself as a famous director who receives a message on Instagram from a young woman who commits suicide because she was banned from making films. The poems in the film are written by Shahrzad, who was one of the greatest movie stars in Iran before the revolution and was later banned from acting.
