Denis Villeneuve made the premiere of the culmination of this idea, Arrival, at Venice Film Festival. Adapted from Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life”, Arrival follows linguistics professor Louise Banks who is recruited by the US military when several alien spaceships appear in different places of the world. Although not yet clear whether the “invaders” are friend or foe, the world is on the verge of an all out war, while Louise and a mathematician will try to communicate with the aliens instead. Shot by Villeneuve after Sicario and before Blade Runner, Arrival is an “intelligent” science-fiction film that examines the concepts of language, technology, communication, and our place in the universe.
