Following a five-year hiatus after the much acclaimed Happy Hour, director Hamaguchi returns with the story of a woman who falls in love with two extremely similar-looking men in Asako 1 & 2. Adapted from Tomoka Shibasaki’s novel, and premiering at Cannes, the film is named after its protagonist, Asako, who first gets together with the young and charismatic Baku, and years later after breaking up with him, with another man who looks much like Baku. When Baku tries to reattach, Asako is left conflicted both emotionally and mentally. Focusing on the mysteries of the heart and the mind, while recounting a romantic coming-of-age story reminiscent of the French new wave, Asako 1 & 2 emphasises Hamaguchi’s place within contemporary Asian cinema as an innovative director.
