2015 Cannes Palme d’Or

Winning the greatest honor at Cannes, Jacques Audiard charts the plight of immigrants all over the world by focusing on the lives of Sri Lankan refugees in Paris. Featuring novelist and former Tamil Tiger child soldier Antonythasan Jesuthasan in the lead role, the film follows former soldier Dheepan, who, to escape the civil war in Sri Lanka, poses as a family together with a young woman and a little girl. They end up settling in a housing project outside Paris. As immigrants, their everyday struggle with cultural barriers will magnify with parenting issues and encounters with local crime figures.
