The latest film by Gus Van Sant, a pioneer of American independent film, tells an extraordinary story of success, determination, and joy of life. Praised for Joaquin Phoenix’s leading performance which is already in talks for the 2019 Oscars, the film is inspired from the life story of cartoonist John Callahan, a friend of Van Sant. Quadriplegic after a car crash when he was 21, Callahan discovers his talent for drawing during his tough rehabilitation process, and afterwards has to deal with his drinking problem along with his increasing worldwide fame. Premiering at Sundance, the film also features musicians Carrie Brownstein, Beth Ditto, and Kim Gordon. Gus Van Sant had received the Istanbul Film Festival’s Cinema Honorary Award in 2007.
