2015 Venice Golden Lion

The first film to ever have entered the Venice Film Festival, From Afar also won the grand prize of the 2015 Venice Film Festival which concluded 13 September. In his debut feature film, director Lorenzo Vigas tells the story of a rich denture-maker who gets sexually involved with a young man from a street hustler, a tough young man from one of the city's gangs. The film not only expresses frustrated desire but also narrates the chaotic social panorama of Venezuelan capital, Caracas. “I want to dedicate this prize to my amazing country, Venezuela,” said director Vigas at the award ceremony in Venice, “I know we have a few problems, but if we talk about them we will overcome them.” The Venice competition jury was headed by Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron whose Oscar-winning Gravity was screened last year.
