2019 Venice Golden Lion
Enjoying great success following its Venice prize, Todd Phillips’ most recent film explores the background to Batman’s archenemy Joker, and explores the term “villain,” analyzing the origins of the notion. Joker observes an antisocial man who increasingly becomes incompatible with society as he is becomes subject of bullying by teenagers on the street, men in suits on the subway, and the pranks of fellow clowns at work. This man, who is trapped within a vicious existential circle between insensitivity, cruelty and eventually betrayal, makes one bad decision after another to initiate a chain of criminal incidents.
Joker is already in the talks for upcoming Oscar nominations including Joaquin Phoenix’s candidacy for Best Actor.
