Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Palm d’Or-winning latest film is a touching family drama akin to the director’s trademark style. The heroes of the film are a family whose members get by through stealing from supermarkets, living in a tiny cramped house. When they find an abandoned young girl on the street, they don’t think twice to take her in. With this addition, the family is enlarged, but of course, no good deed stays unpunished. Jury president Cate Blanchett praised Shoplifters saying "It was one of the quietest, loveliest and most emotionally enduring films in the competition." Reminiscent of legendary director Ozu in technique and subject, Shoplifters became the first Japanese film winning the Palm d’Or since 1997 and the country’s Oscar nominee. Kirin Kiki, veteran actress who played the grandmother passed away September 15.
