2021 Venice Golden Lion, FIPRESCI Prize

Happening is a striking drama that tells the story of a young woman who is trying to end an unwanted pregnancy in 1963, when abortion was not yet legal in France. Anne is a young student preparing for her finals in order to leave her small town and go to her dream school. An unwanted pregnancy shatters her plans and forces her to seek an illegal abortion and any aid she can encounter. Happening focuses on Anne in a turning point in her life and manages to portray the potential effects an abortion ban could have on a young woman, without any judgment. Adapted from Annie Ernaux’s memoirs, the film won the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival, confirming the success of a new generation of female directors.
