2021 Cannes Jury Prize

From mysticism to metaphysics, from the realm of the dead to forests, Apichatpong Weerasethakul has masterfully fused spiritualism with nature in his films. In his latest, Tilda Swinton plays Jessica, a Scottish woman in Bogota to visit her sister, who after hearing a loud bang at daybreak, begins experiencing a mysterious sensory syndrome while traversing the jungles of Colombia. Inspired from his own childhood, his hallucinations, and Latin American history, Weerasethakul, in his idiosyncratic cinematic way brings together senses, geography, and historical memory. Memoria was declared Colombia's Oscar contender.
